Picture of the month: Easter Island

I’ve always been fascinated with Moai.  The Moai are statues carved from stone and were made by the early settlers of Easter Island (or Rapa Nui).  The statues are huge (some over 30 feet tall) and the island that is their home, Easter Island, located over 3,000km from Chile is thought to be one of the most remote inhabited places to live in the world.   This picture showing the Moai in their majesty serves to remind me why they are a source of fascination to me and many other travelers.   Have you ever seen the Moai or been to Easter Island?  Tell us in the comments!   Photograph by Phillie Casablanca   Continue Reading ?

7 ways to have a great holiday every holiday

Although the thought of going on holiday is exciting, there’s often a bit of nervousness involved too – what if you end up hating it?, what if you get homesick?  I’m here to say, forget all that negativity.  Here are a few tips to help increase your chances of having a fabulous holiday every time you go on holiday.  1.  Go on holiday with an open mind:  If you go to a new place expecting to hate it, you probably will but if you go somewhere new with an attitude of excitement and expect to have fun, you probably will too.  2.  Clean your room or house before you go on holiday:  It might seem strange to do the cleaning before you go on holiday but when you think about it, it makes sense.  It means you’ll come back to a clean (or at least, not so dirty) house and will spend less time cleaning... How to be pleasantly surprised on holiday

The one thing I’ve learned from holidays is that my expectations and reality are usually two different things.  When I go on holiday expecting to have fun, I usually don’t and when I think my holiday is going to be quiet and almost boring, it turns out to be a blast.  The most recent example of this was when I went to The Gambia.  Continue reading → Continue Reading ?

The best season to go on holiday

In Lagos, where I live, there are two basic seasons:  rainy and dry season and right now, we’re in the rainy part.  You can’t miss it.  Rainy season runs roughly from April till October and it rains pretty much everyday during the season.  Harmattan, (I can never say that word without thinking of Ralph Fiennes in The English Patient. Sigh.) when the winds from the Sahara blows into the southern part of Nigeria, occurs between December and March (according to what I was taught in primary school many many years ago) but these days, Continue reading → Continue Reading ?

Restaurant Review: The Ice Cream Factory

The Ice Cream Factory is a dessert restaurant in Victoria Island, Lagos.  Inside the restaurant, there are regular tables and chairs as well as soft, cosy armchairs with low tables on one side of the room.  You can either sit at a table and order what you want when a waiter brings you a menu or if you just want to breeze in and out, you can stand near the front of the restaurant and pick the ice-cream flavour or cake you’d like from the array in front of you.     Continue reading → Continue Reading ?

Living in Lagos

This regular feature shows, through pictures, what living in Lagos is like for me.  It’s a picture-heavy post that will hopefully help you get the vibe of Lagos from a particular perspective.  I hope you enjoy it. A few months ago, my mum had a memorial service and reception for her late parents.  Here are a few pictures from the events.   My parents during the church service Continue reading → Continue Reading ?

Picture of the month

The Victoria Falls are a truly beautiful sight.  They can be accessed from Zimbabwe or Zambia and attract tourists who go bungee-jumping or white-water rafting near the falls.  For folks less hooked on adrenaline, just seeing the falls would be just fine.  I visited Victoria Falls many years ago with my parents and was mesmerised by them.  I’ll write a post about that sometime soon.   Have you ever seen the Victoria Falls or been to Zimbabwe or Zambia?  Tell us about it in the comments!
